Artist’s description:
This installation chronicles my investigations of the Wheeler family history in the city of Newark, N.J., a history that spans over two hundred years and seven successive generations of family who have called Newark home. Included in the installation are a slide presentation which includes an 1830 enumeration record of free inhabitants census documents, military records, a wedding certificate and a video of my walking expeditions to visit addresses listed on in these documents, often encountering an original structure, vacant lots, highway retaining walls, or new structures with the same address. At its core, the work examines how histories are maintained and erased, and who or what determines their fate. The work is personal and essential, it says we were here.
