Artist’s description:
This site-specific piece is literally “for the birds.” It is up high in the trees and in a secluded place in the woods, where very few people ever pass. The Rusty Quebec Blackbird is an endangered species, down by 90% from where it was in Quebec in the 1970’s. For several years, I have been making abstract photograms of birds, ferns, and wildflowers on the endangered species list. I was thinking and reading about race in America when I made this work. It's not front and center, but I chose the blackbird after the Beatles song “Blackbird,” which aligned with the civil rights movement at the time.

This piece employs lumen printing, a simple photographic process that draws latent color from black & white photo papers. This collaged photogram is made by exposing many different brands of black & white photo paper to sunlight to create the color, then scanning these fugitive colors, reprinting them, and cutting them out. This work is displayed in a window at the cabin in the woods in Quebec, Canada where I have been sheltering in place since mid-March.
