Artist’s description:
Works from the Botánico Series (2010-ongoing) are inspired by weeds and wild untamed, nature within urban spaces. They explore the tension between the human and botanical world.

As we strive to exert control over nature, nature responds with perseverance and resilient power, as weeds slowly move into abandoned spaces—spreading and reclaiming its space.

In this series, I use a variety of materials, including artificial plants that are normally designed to adorn and create maintenance-free gardens. Such manufactured plants are normally depicted in their “prime” state, often flowered and un-wilted, yet static and under our complete control. I deconstruct these plants and rearrange them to mimic weeds or wild nature, referencing the remarkable strength and resiliency present in nature. Other materials like lace, sequined fabrics beads and jewelry are used to reference the body, as we are part of nature, but also to allude to the celebratory and joyful aspect inherent in nature and in ourselves.
