Artist’s description:
The project is a site specific artistic intervention in Stephenson Pharmacy (est.1899), in downtown Cairo. I adopt a research based methodology to renovate and excavate local histories of pharmacy, using the site as a lens to problematize museology as a practice that is linked to colonial processes of looting and extraction. This in itself is reflected in how mass production and extraction have displaced the spiritual and artistic dimensions of the therapeutic encounter. Through the intervention I hope to imagine different possibilities and forms of therapeutic encounters, as well as question the dominant biomedical discourse through examining local histories of healthcare.
