Artist’s description:
A Nation’s Cloth is a hand woven piece inspired by the weaving made by slaves on cotton plantations in the United States. It pays homage to those who built the cloth of this nation and all that was endured.

The work was created based on research about fiber cultivation and craft made by African-Americans on cotton plantations; the book Plantation Slave Weavers by Mary Madison served as a main reference. Reading the narrative of former slaves offers not only a testimony of involvement in textile craft, but also exemplifies the resilience and insistence of humanity, something we are in need of during these times.

The weaving is made of olefin fiber, a material that’s commonly used in construction sites for insulation, and one that endures weathering. The olefin in this case is in the form of wristbands, an object that is often numbered and gives individuals access to events.

The work is shown at the façade of the Bakehouse Art Complex, a non-profit institution that proposes a bridge between artists and the local community, and which is situated nearby Overtown, a historic Black neighborhood in Miami, FL.
